The Wedge rollbar The rollbar is a competition standard design with two rear struts that go through the rear parcel shelf and into two special jigs that are located directly on top of the shock absorber mounts. Again, fabricated by Rollcentre, the main hoop is bolted through to the outside rigger tube and is located under the main roof hoop so that the car can still be driven roof up or roof down. In both cases, special access holes are cut in the bodywork . These are then covered with special panels which are fitted under the carpet trim. As a result, they are completely hidden and it looks like the roll bar was fitted to the car when it was made. In addition to the special panels, a special elastic sealant is used to stop any water getting into the car.

A side ways view of the roll bar and installation for a Wedge. The S series is similar. The roof panel can still be stored horizontally in the boot and in reality, the rear struts do not take up much space on the parcel shelf at all. They even provide a set of nice mounting points for additional safety equipment, such as a plumbed in fire extinguisher. The roll bar offers several other advantages: - It provides a central mount behind each seat for a full harness without having to make any special fittings.
- The fitting procedure gives two access holes in the rear boot shelf which make getting access to the shock absorber mounts extremely easy.
- The chassis feels a lot stiffer than before and the rear wheels seem to move with the front wheels as a complete unit instead of there being a feeling of a slight flexing. This is really only experienced when driving the car hard (on a sprint) but it was one of the first things that was noticed. Stiffening the chassis is one technique that is often used on modified competition cars but is banned from the standard production class that many Wedges compete in. Fitting a roll bar is a recommended safety feature that just happens to legally improve the chassis.
It is bolted and removable to give complete access to the chassis and related components if necessary. The S series roll bar This is similar in design to the Wedge version but due to the slightly different chassis design, the fittings are different. The same Goalpost arrangement is used with the rear seatbelt harness mounts mounted on the two rear struts. |
